How to get to Solitude

Head 13 miles up Big Cottonwood Canyon (SR-190) from Salt Lake City to Solitude. Fly into SLC International Airport, hop in a shuttle or rent a car, and arrive at Solitude 34 miles later. With hundreds of flights arriving and departing each day, you’ll be able to maximize your time at Solitude.
    • Winter Parking
      Carpooling and public transit are important to Solitude Mountain Resort and essential to reducing congestion in Big Cottonwood Canyon while improving air quality. Our parking rates are designed to incentivize carpooling. Paid parking will be in effect daily from 12:01 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. during the winter season. From December 15, 2023, to April 14, 2024, reservations will be required on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays until 11:00 a.m. Solitude and Ikon Pass holders can ride the UTA Ski Bus for free.

      Outside of periods that parking reservations are required, parking payment can be submitted via TAP N SKI mobile payment or with one of the many payment kiosks located throughout our lots.

      Parking Reservations
      Following a great deal of feedback from our guests, we have committed ourselves to improving the arrival experience to Solitude. A key strategy in that effort is the implementation of required parking reservations on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays*, from December 15, 2023, through April 14, 2024.

      Parking lots will open at 7:00 a.m. and reservations will be required for any arrivals before 11:00 a.m. From 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., you may park at the daily rate, without a reservation, as space becomes available. After 1:00 p.m., parking is free, no reservation required.

      Season parking pass holders can hold 5 active reservations, while daily rate users can hold up to 3 active reservations. Cars with 4 or more occupants will remain free but will require a reservation.

      Some parking inventory for all dates this season are currently available. Additional parking inventory will become available at 6:00 p.m. MST each Sunday for the following weekend. A small number of spaces will become available on the day of at 6:00 a.m. MST based on cancelations and snow removal.

      Find the answers to specific parking reservations questions:
      As many can attest to, during weekends and holiday periods it’s common for more vehicles to enter the canyon than Solitude, the Town of Brighton, and Brighton Resort have parking capacity for. That results in more traffic than is necessary, needless congestion, and guests being turned away upon arrival.

      We are committed to improving the arrival experience and have heard requests continuously from our guests and community to implement parking reservations. We’ve studied the matter closely, with a continued focus on accessibility and care for the Big Cottonwood Canyon watershed, and have developed a process that we are certain will ease arrival on our busiest days, incentivize carpooling, and combat traffic congestion.

      Parking reservations are required on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays from December 15, 2023, through April 14, 2024.

      • Parking reservations are required before 11:00 a.m. on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays (January 1, 2024, January 15, 2024, and February 19, 2024).
      • Between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. on reservation days, parking transitions to a space available model, with a daily fee (free for cars with four or more people).
      • Guests arriving after 1:00 p.m. park free, no reservations required, every day. This is an hour earlier than the 22/23 season.
      • Cars with four or more people that park for free will still need parking reservations.
      • Solitude does not require parking reservations Monday – Friday, with the exception of New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Presidents Day (January 1, 2024, January 15, 2024, and February 19, 2024).
      • Parking is paid and space available Monday – Friday until 1:00 p.m.

      Numerous reservations can be held
      • Single-day users can hold three reserved days at a time
      • Full season parking pass holders can hold five reservations at a time
      • Midweek parking pass holders can hold three reservations at a time
      • Reservations may be canceled prior to 6:00 a.m. on the day of arrival without penalty

      • Arrive with four or more people in your car (reservations still required on reservation days).
      • Arrive after 1:00 p.m. when free parking is available.
      • Ride the UTA Ski Bus, which will have enhanced service this year and is free for all Solitude and Ikon Pass holders.
      • Download the Solitude Carpool app and share a ride.
      • Stay at Solitude — lodging guests always receive free parking during their stay.
      On many weekends and holiday periods, more vehicles enter the canyon than Solitude, the Town of Brighton, and Brighton Resort have parking capacity for. All three are implementing parking reservations this year.

      Requiring parking reservations on weekends and holidays will increase convenience and reduce congestion by limiting the number of vehicles that drive up the canyon. This also reduces the number of vehicles that are inevitably turned away on these days as parking lots fill up.

      Furthermore, guests will enjoy more flexibility as to when they need to arrive (no more 6:00 a.m. arrivals to find a parking spot) and experience a more dispersed traffic flow in the morning.
      Solitude will continue to incentivize carpooling by allowing cars with four or more people to park free (parking reservations are still required on reservation days).

      Solitude will continue to invest heavily in the UTA Ski Bus by covering the fee to allow free ridership for all Solitude and Ikon Pass holders. Additionally, UTA has announced enhanced Ski Bus service this season.

      We’ll be operating three full-size employee buses (in cooperation with Brighton Resort), and 12 employee shuttles. These will remove a significant number of vehicles from the road while also pulling employees from the UTA Ski Buses, allowing more seats for the general public.

      We are also fully launching the Solitude Carpool app, which includes incentives for usage.
      Our parking strategy has always been aimed at reducing low-occupancy vehicles and incentivizing carpooling in Big Cottonwood Canyon.

      Our paid parking tiers that rewarded cars with two and three people have made some improvements in occupancy but have not adjusted guest behavior to the extent that we had hoped to see. As such, we are fully committed to encouraging and incentivizing cars with four or more people. This allows for the most accessibility to the mountain.

      Cars with fewer than four people will be charged the same parking fee.
      Vehicles arriving without parking reservations on days when they are required will not be allowed to park in any Solitude parking lot. Vehicles that violate this policy and park without reservations will receive a fine.

      Reservations are not required after 11:00 a.m.
      Yes, but guests should be aware that this season, the Town of Brighton will be requiring parking reservations for roadside parking on SR-190 between Willow Heights trailhead and Guardsman Pass Road on select days.

      Details will be posted online; Solitude does not control parking on SR-190 and all funds from roadside parking reservations go to the Town of Brighton.
      If your plans change, please cancel your reservation at parksolitude.com so another guest can take your space before 6:00 a.m. on your arrival day. If you do not cancel your reservation by 6:00 a.m., there is a no-show fee.
      Road closures in Big Cottonwood Canyon are uncommon. If SR-190 does close, reservations will be canceled and refunded for those that did not arrive before the closure.
      An unlimited number of Midweek season parking passes are available for purchase. Because it’s difficult to enforce vehicle occupancy among parking pass holders, we are limiting the number of Full season parking passes. Previous season parking pass holders will have first access to purchase from November 6 - 10, and any remaining will be made available to the general public starting on November 13.

      Season parking passes allow you to pay for parking for the entire season. It’s important to note that during weekends and on holidays, season parking pass holders are still required to make a parking reservation if they wish to arrive before 11:00 a.m.
      • Full season parking pass holders will be able to hold five reserved days at a time.
      • Single-day users and Midweek season parking pass holders will be able to hold three reserved days at a time.
      • Reservations can be canceled any time before 6:00 a.m. on the day of arrival without penalty.
      • On November 15 at 12:00 p.m. MST, some parking inventory for all dates this season will be made available.
      • Additional parking inventory will become available at 6:00 p.m. MST each Sunday for the following weekend.
      • A small number of spaces will become available on the day of at 6:00 a.m. MST based on cancelations and snow removal.
      ADA parking spaces will be available through the same reservation process, but are available at no cost. When making a reservation, choose the Carpool/ADA option. Upon arrival, you must display an ADA placard to gain access to your reserved ADA parking.
      Yes - as long as your lesson was booked at least 2 days in advance and it is occurring on a day that parking reservations are required. Such guests will receive a pre-arrival email one day prior to their lesson. That email will contain a code to allow access to an inventory of parking that is set aside for this purpose.
      Yes, you will need a reservation to park at Solitude on the day(s) that your child is with Team Solitude or Cruisers. To ensure families in these programs can secure a parking spot, we will provide access to a pool of $399 parking season passes that we’ve set aside for these programs which include a reservation for each of your program days. You can gain access to this pass by completing a form shared to you by the Ski and Ride school. After completion of the form, Interstate Parking will reach out to you to complete the transaction.
      Parking is now free at the Nordic Center for the rest of the season and no reservations are required.
      This season, vehicles with four or more occupants can park free every day but will still need to make reservations for weekends (Saturday – Sunday) and holidays.

      When making reservations, guests who plan to have four or more occupants in their car will not be charged upfront and will check in with Solitude parking staff at the entry to confirm vehicle occupancy.
      Guests who planned to carpool when they made their reservation but arrive with fewer than four occupants will simply pay the standard fare onsite; there is no additional penalty, and your reservation is still valid. We know that plans sometimes shift.

      If you find yourself down a rider, we suggest using the Solitude Carpool app to find another rider and park for free.
      A credit or debit card is required to make parking reservations online. All transactions will be processed at the time of booking. With a paid parking reservation, you can go straight from your car to the lifts.

      The exception is vehicles that have four or more occupants — if you plan on having a full car, you’ll indicate that choice when making your reservation.

      If you don’t know what your vehicle’s license plate information will be, enter your personal vehicle's license plate number to make your reservation. Upon picking up your rental car, please log into your account to update your plate number on your reservation.


      If in doubt, check with our parking staff. The parking system operates off of license plate numbers.

      Provide proof of rides shared by presenting your stats (on the app’s profile page) to the Moonbeam ticket office and collect your decals. Keep your decals handy as you build your badge because we will be offering deals and promotions throughout the season as users reach milestones.

      Simplify your UTA Ski Bus ride by leaving your gear with us. We'll store 1 pair of skis or 1 snowboard per guest, free for Ikon Pass and Solitude pass holders. Limited to 7 consecutive days. Find our Ski & Board Check at the Guest Services desk, on the lower level of the Ski & Ride School building.

      Perfect for visitors and locals alike, the Cottonwood Connect takes skiers and snowboarders to Solitude with pick-ups and drop-offs at several hotels and public park & ride locations. The Cottonwood Connect Ski Shuttle will begin service in late December and run through April on weekends and holidays. Reserve your spot.

      Car Rentals
      There are various car rental options located at Salt Lake City International Airport and in the Salt Lake City Area. In the winter, please be sure to rent a four-wheel drive vehicle with proper snow tires to access Solitude safely.

      Lyft/Uber
      Getting to Solitude Mountain Resort with Lyft/Uber is a convenient and affordable option, but please note that ride-share drivers are scarce in Big Cottonwood Canyon and it may be hard to find a ride down.

      UDOT (Utah Department of Transportation) Guidelines for Travel in Big Cottonwood Canyon
      The UDOT requires that ALL vehicles traveling in the canyon between October 1 and April 30 must be four-wheel drive (4x4). They must also be equipped with approved snow tires with sufficient tread and identified by M + S (mud and snow) or a snowflake symbol on the sidewall of the tire. Absent approved tires, drivers must have properly sized chains in the vehicle ready for use. Violators of these regulations will be ticketed.

      View Road Conditions
      See live road conditions and traffic information through UDOT Traffic cameras. UDOT also manages an active Twitter feed during the winter that offers timely updates on road closures, delays, conditions, congestion, etc.


      Guardsman Pass Closure
      Connecting Big Cottonwood Canyon to Park City, Guardsman Pass is only open during summer and fall (conditions permitting). It will always be closed in the winter – typically from November 1 to May 25, but possibly longer depending on conditions. The only access between Solitude and Park City during the winter months is via I-80.


      Ride Hailing Caution
      Getting to Solitude by Lyft or Uber is easy. However, you may find it difficult to summon a ride when you are ready to depart. This is due to the scarcity of available drivers in Big Cottonwood Canyon. Please use caution when planning to travel down the canyon. You may look to Utah Mountain Shuttle.


      Parking on Highway 190
      If you park along the highway in Big Cottonwood Canyon, all four tires must be right of the white line. Obey all posted signs and cones or risk being ticketed and towed. If your car is towed, call UPD (Unified Police Department of Greater Salt Lake) at 801.743.7000. UPD is the prevailing jurisdiction along Highway 190.
